NextGen Collision Houston
Hail season and parking lot dings leave a lot of Houston drivers with the same question: does this dent need full bodywork, or can it be fixed without repainting? Here’s how to tell the difference.
What Is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)?
Paintless dent repair uses specialized tools to gently massage a dent back into shape from behind the panel, without cutting, filling, or repainting. It works because the original paint and factory finish are still intact — the metal just needs to be reshaped.
When PDR Is the Right Call
- The paint surface is not cracked, chipped, or scratched at the damage site
- The dent is shallow to moderate, without a sharp crease
- The damage isn’t near a panel edge or body line
- Hail damage across multiple panels, without paint damage
When You Need Traditional Bodywork Instead
- The paint is cracked, chipped, or scraped down to bare metal
- There’s a sharp crease or the metal has stretched
- The dent is on a body line or edge where access is limited
- There’s structural damage underneath, not just a cosmetic dent
In these cases, traditional collision repair — which may involve filler, panel replacement, and repainting and color matching — is the only way to properly restore the vehicle.
Cost and Time Differences
PDR is almost always faster and less expensive than traditional bodywork, since there’s no paint work, drying time, or blending required. Many single-dent PDR repairs can be completed same-day. Traditional bodywork with paint typically takes longer due to prep, paint curing, and clear coat time.
